Abstract:

'5Rcycle' was born from humble beginnings; when founder I noticed waste wasn't being separated at the source. This oversight meant an enormous amount was unnecessarily going to landfill when instead at least half of it could have been recycled or composted. Further, continuous littering and poor waste disposal practices lead to overflowing trash cans, polluting land and water resources irreversibly.

'5R' Cycle Foundation is a non-profit organization to promote zero waste management practices to switch from the current linear economy to a circular economy. According to the 5 R's, four actions should be taken, if possible, prior to 'Recycling': Refuse, Reduce, Reuse and Repurpose.

Incorporating this methodology into your daily practices, be it business or residence, will minimize landfill waste and help maintain a balanced ecosystem. Separating waste at source (the moment at which you chuck your rubbish in the bin) helps to decrease damaging greenhouse gases and the production of virgin materials.

Our vision is to transition from linear economy to circular economy by establishing a zero waste management system in order to promote environment, wildlife and marine conservation.

The duration of this lecture will be one hour fifteen minutes. Mr.Shailesh Sheth is a well-known figure to IRMA members as he is associated with us for a long time. Mr.Shailesh Sheth is a practicing Advocate in Central Excise & Service Tax for past more than 20 years. Also a leading consultant for GST. Published books on these subjects. A regular Columnist in “VYAPAR” a Bi-weekly Business News Paper of “Janmabhoomi group of publications, Business Standard (Gujarat Edition) and Divya Bhaskar” on Central Excise and Service Tax.

We are sure that this webinar interaction will act as guidance and inspiration to many of our members not only in current situation but also over next few months.

I am delighted to inform you that Indian Resins Manufacturers Association (I R M A) has scheduled a half day Seminar on the theme “RESINS TODAY & TOMORROW-VII” on Saturday the 25th September,2010 at Hotel Sea Princess, Juhu, Mumbai.  The topic of the Seminar would be “Challenges & Opportunities”.

The objective of the seminar is to understand the significant rate of changing business environment and to provide stimulus for further improvements and new developments. With globalization of Indian economy availability of various ingredients, for user Industries confirming to the global standard is gaining considerable importance. As a part of IRMA’s activities for the benefit of the members and resin-consuming industries, our association is organizing a "One Day Workshop" on "FOCUSING ON QUALITY & UTILITY FOR BETTER PROFITABILITY" The workshop will be conducted at the Institute of Chemical Technology, Matunga, Mumbai on Saturday the 28th April 2018. The convenor of the Workshop is Mr.Ashok Goklani, Past President of IRMA and the Co-convenor is Mr.Aditya Chandrachud, Mg. Committee Member.

This workshop is being organized to have a better technical and operational understanding to the manufacture of Resins. It is a golden opportunity for the Owners, Partners, CEO, General Managers and Decision makers, Resin and All other Industries, who would like to increase the profits of their organization. As a part of IRMA’s activities for the benefit of the members and resin-consuming industries, our association alongwith ICT is organizing a “One Day Workshop” on “INFLUENCE OF RESINS ON COATING PERFORMANCE.” The workshop will be conducted at the Institute of Chemical Technology, Matunga, Mumbai on Saturday the 2nd April 2016.

This workshop is being organized to have a better technical understanding of variation of Coating performance due to Resins.   It is a golden opportunity for the technical staff, who is involved in the manufacturing/application of the resins. The workshop will cover technical lectures and demonstration. 

The topics of the workshop have been selected for the benefit the technical staff, of both resin manufacturing as well as consuming industries and techno-commerical staff who are involved in marketing. We request you to depute your representatives to take the advantage of this technical workshop that will be conducted by the most knowledgeable persons from the resin field.

You are aware that the Union Budget for 2016-2017 will be presented by our Honourable Finance Minister, Shri Arun Jaitley.  The budget has very high expectations and many new measures are bound to be taken into consideration in order to boost the industrial output and thrust upon “Make in India” which is likely to take the centre stage.    As you are also aware that there are many small clauses, terms and conditions which are not announced during the budget but they are an integral part of the budget.

To know and understand the implications and intricacies of the budget, we are pleased to inform you that IRMA in association with IPCA (Indian Paint & Coating Association) have invited the following specialists to throw more light on the subjects.

Direct Taxes: For Direct Taxes and Income Tax, we have Mr.Sunil Kapadia, a highly qualified Chartered Accountant from the well known accounting firm M/s. Ernst & Young to give his views.

Indirect Taxes: With special focus on GST we have Mr.Sunil Gabhawala from S.B.Gabhawala & Co. who will give his detailed presentation. Mr.Gabhawala is a master in indirect taxes. He is also a member of the Government GST panel which gives recommendations to the Government on the procedures for implementation of GST.

The budget meet will be held on 5th March 2016 from 5.30 P.M. onwards at Matunga Gujarati Club, Nathalal Parekh Marg, Near Aurora Theater Matunga, Mumbai 400 019.

The objective of the seminar is to understand the significant rate of changing business environment and to provide stimulus for further improvements and new developments. With globalization of Indian economy availability of various ingredients, for user Industries confirming to the global standard is gaining considerable importance. Speakers from the various Industries will present their views at this seminar.

A 2 Day Workshop on 'DESIGNING FORMULATIONS FOR RESINS'
Dates: 3rd and 4th July 2009

IRMA Chairman, Mr. Vicky Kapur inaugurated the Workshop.

42 delegates attended the Workshop.

There were five lectures:

There were power point presentations of all lecturers with detailed discussion and interaction with students. There were question and answer sessions. The delegates were very much interested in the lectures and would like IRMA to conduct such kind of workshops/seminars. Open house discussion held on the concluding day and certificates were given to the delegates.

Resins - Today & Tomorrow - VI ~ "Changing Face of Resin Industry"

It was also followed by the Annual General Body Meeting of IRMA.

Mr. H. M. Bharuka, Managing Director, Kansai Nerolac Paints Ltd. was the Chief Guest at the Seminar. There were total of five papers presented on various topics. The seminar started in the traditional Indian way of lighting the auspicious lamp by Mr. Bharuka and the IRMA office bearers.

The Chief Guest, Mr. H. M. Bharuka has called upon all the associations representing the coatings fraternity to come together under one umbrella organization in order to put forth the problems faced by the industry unitedly before the authorities. This approach, he said, would help tremendously in promoting the interest and aid its growth. He urged the small scale, adversely impacted by high prices, to consider pooling their purchases, in order to get better leverage with suppliers.

Mr. Bharuka also called upon resin manufacturers to develop innovative products in close consultation with paint companies and offered his company’s assistance in the effort.

He also stressed the importance of safety, health and environment (SHE) aspects in resin manufacture and use.

Mr. D. M. Sathaye, Convenor of the Seminar welcoming the delegates pointed out that technical development alone will not suffice to meet the growing challenges faced by the industry. "There is a need for efficient management for survival and growth," he added. Hence a presentation on very interesting of management "Brand Marketing" by renowned brand Guru Mr. Jagdeep Kapoor, was arranged. He also gave details of the other presentations.

Speaking on the occasion Mr. Ashok Mehta, outgoing Chairman of IRMA, said that this was the 6th in the series of "Resin Today & Tomorrow" Seminars. Mr. Mehta stressed the need for the industry to take on the challenges updated technology, which will help promote use of resins in new applications and with technical advancements to produce quality products.

Incoming IRMA Chairman, Mr. Vicky Kapur, gave the vote of thanks.

The first session was chaired by Mr. Asesh Sarkar, General Manager R & D Decorative Paints, Asko Nobel India. There were two presentations in this session.

Dr. Prashant Samant, a Committee Member of IRMA spoke on "Water thinnable alkyds". Dr. Prashant Samant pointed to the considerable effort of the coatings industry to develop low or zero VOC content of industrial solvent-based coating operations such as in the automotive, appliance, general metal and furniture industries.

Dr. Ashok Shingore, Sr. General Manager, Sudarshan Chemicals Ltd., pointed out that 'green' issue, which had previously been marginalized as debatable or nice to have, are now recognized as critical for business. "In today’s intensely competitive market, a company’s environmental performance is becoming as valuable to its reputation and bottom-lines as its health and safety record. Hence, companies need to be able to demonstrate that they are tackling environmental issues with the same seriousness and rigor as they do the matter of health and safety".

According to him, over the last decade, more and more business have come to realize that taking actions to reduce their carbon footprint can have a positive effect on their profits, reputation and society as whole. "Many influential clients, particularly in the public sector, now specify minimum environmental standards when taking on new suppliers and contractors".

In his view, there are sound financial reasons for improving company's environmental performance. "It can lead to financial savings through better use of resources, better management of wastes and more recycling of materials, as well as reduce bills from careful energy use".

He also urged organizations to regularly review their environmental management systems and keep abreast of changes to the laws, to ensure it is being implemented properly.

The second session was chaired ably by Dr. Mosongo Moukwa, Vice President, Technology, Asian Paints Ltd.. There were three presentations in this session.

Mr. Vrijesh Kumar Singh, Manager – Application Development & Customer Support, Perstorp Chemicals spoke on "Development in polyols for coatings". He gave the introduction of polyols, its applications in coatings and manufacturing process. He then gave some details about the basic polyols – Neopentyl polyhydric alcohols, their market analysis and global consumption pattern. He also discussed about specialty polyols like polyether polyols, polyester polyols, polycaprolactone polyols, polycarbonate polyols, their products and applications.

He then gave details about the Perstorp product range, their new products and applications.

Dr. Paul Cameron, Regional Technical Sales Manager, Polymers & Coatings, Croda Singapore Pte Ltd., gave a presentation on Novel applications of Dimer fatty acids. These have been used for many years to bring high performance to materials such as epoxy coatings and reactive hot melt polyamide adhesives, he said. More recently, Croda (former Uniqema) has developed many new grades of dimer acids and a number of derivatives, he informed. These forms of the material bring a number of special properties including better colour, UV / heat / colour stability and controlled functionality, in conjunction with the long established benefits of the technology such as hydrolytic stability, adhesion and flexibility. This has enabled dimer fatty acids to be exploited in a wide spectrum of new applications including elastomers, adhesives, coatings and foams, he said.

The third and the last presentation in this session was on Brand marketing by the renowned Brand Guru Mr. Jagdeep Kapoor, CMD, Samsika Marketing Consultants. In his dynamic interactive lecture he explained the relevance of branding and its importance for the SME sector.

Mr. Ballal Chandrachud summarized the events and gave a vote of thanks.

IRMA has taken a small step towards the social responsibility of sharing knowledge by organizing an educational Workshop on "Resin Process Technology". The Workshop was conducted on 8th and 9th June, in co–ordination with University Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai.

The Workshop was a feather in the cap of the organizers. It was attended by 40 delegates from various industries and was highly appreciated by all the delegates. The participating delegates requested IRMA, for organizing such educational Workshops more frequently.

IRMA Chairman, Mr. Ashok Mehta inaugurated the Workshop.

There were 5 lectures, presentations and laboratory demonstrations covering the subjects:-

1. Resin Processing by Prof. Dr. M. A. Shenoy
2. Process Design aspects of Resin manufacturing by Dr. A. B. Pandit, UGC, Research Scientist 'C', Professor visiting lecturers of various institutions.
3. Resin Process Design and Development by Mr. Prakash Salvi, CEO of M/s. Bharat Resins Ltd., he has also worked with reputed concerns and is a technical advisor for many companies. He is also a visiting lecturer of University Institute of Chemical Technology (U.I.C.T.), Matunga, Mumbai.
4. Processing of Emulsions by Dr. Prashant S Samant. He is a Doctorate in Polymer Technology from University Institute of Chemical Technology (U.I.C.T.), Mumbai and has worked in reputed concerns & is visiting Professor of University Institute of Chemical Technology (U.I.C.T.). He has been the Past President of The Colour Society and Managing Committee Member of IRMA.
5. Resin Process Technology by Mr. Shivaji Durgavale, Technical Executive of Kansai Nerolac Paints Ltd.

The lectures and presentations of the faculty members were very informative, educative and imparted the knowledge.

For those who could not participate in technical Workshop, IRMA has immense pleasure to announce that they have come out with a publication of a unique book on 'RESIN

PROCESS TECHNOLOGY' containing text on each subject of the course conducted. The faculty heads have taken enormous efforts by contributing to this book. This book will help younger generation, who venture into the field of RESIN, in understanding the subject and practical aspects of the same.

The convener of the seminar was Mr. Nirav Raveshia, Vice Chairman - Mr. Ashok Mehta, Hon. Secretary - Mr.Vicky Kapur and Treasurer - Mr. Ballal Chandrachud took active role along with other Committee Members Mr. T. R. Raghuraman and Mr. Arvind Sanghvi. Mr.Chandrachud was the Chairman of Programme Committee. Fund raising committee was headed by Mr. Bhupendra Sakaria and Mr. Siddharth Shah. Mr.Ashok Goklani, Committee Member took the Editorship of Souvenir and Members Directory book released on that occasion.

On this occasion Mr. Ashwin Dani, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director, Asian Paints Ltd., was invited as the Chief Guest. In his inaugural address he urged resin manufacturers to better understand end-users requirements and modify their products accordingly. Mr. Dani also spoke about the spiraling crude oil prices and its impact on the resins and paints industries. In the formulation of paints and resins, the best way to reducing costs is to increase the quantity of mineral turpentine oil (MTO) and reduce the solid content. With rise in prices of MTO he said it would be cheaper to increase the solid content in the paints, rather than MTO. He said it is a challenge to the paint/resin formulators as to how to implement these changes.

Dwelling about future opportunities for resin manufacturers, Mr. Dani highlighted the many avenues arising from the rapid growth of the Indian automotive sector. He informed the gathering that with Indian automotive manufacturers setting up manufacturing bases abroad, Indian resin manufacturers will have a lot of opportunities to export their products. Mr. Dani emphasised that Indian companies have to have high standards in their operations as prevalent in European countries and tackle some of the global environmental challenges by working on developing more eco-friendly process and products.

The presentations of the speakers were very informative, educative and imparted the knowledge about the usage part also. The topics were well received by the audience and appreciated IRMA for having arranged this kind of seminar.

Lecture II: Solvent analysis:-
Various solvent properties covered the density / specific gravity, refractive index, boiling range, color, evaporation rate and viscosity. (These properties will be applicable for solvents such as methanol, ethanol, IPA, butanol, benzene, toluene, xylene, MTO, acetone, MEK, MIBK, cyclohexanone, ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, hexane, pentane and Cyclohexane)

Lecture III:-
Topics dealt with include acrylic monomers, aldehydes and ketones and isocyanates.
(The materials in these categories include
1. Acrylic acid, MMA, methacrylic acid, butyl acrylate, styrene, ethyl acrylate
2. Formaldehyde
3. MDI, HDI, TDI)

Lecture IV:-
Specific raw materials to be dealt with include formaldehyde and phenol, phthalic anhydride, maleic anhydride, Pentaerythritol, aldehydes and ketones.
